| Victor pair win back to back Superseries titles |
Just a week after winning the Denmark Open Superseries Premier in Odense the Victor sponsored Korean Men's Doubles pairing of Lee Yong Dae (Bravesword 9) and Jung Jae Sung (Meteor X80) made it two consecutive Superseries titles when they claimed the French Open title in Paris. And it was a repeat of the showdown a week ago as the Victor pair once again came head to head with the world number ones and arch rivals Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng of China. This was the 18th meeting between the two pairs with the Koreans currently 9-8 ahead on victories, but more importantly, the Koreans had won the last two meetings in Superseries finals in China and Denmark. As was to be expected the Chinese pair made an explosive start, eager to put the right the wrongs of a week ago. The Koreans, although not playing particularly well, managed to stay in the game until the mid-game interval and then the Chinese found another gear. The mix of Fu's powerful smashing and Cai's deception coupled with too many uncharacteristic errors from Lee Yong Dae in the front court enabled the Chinese to open up a significant lead and finally close out the first game 21-14. The second game started in much the same vein as the first and when Jung Jae Sung snapped a string on the first point you could have forgiven the Koreans for thinking it wasn’t going to be their day. However, the Victor pair started playing themselves back into the game and with Lee Yong Dae finding his form they regained the initiative and went into the mid-game interval one point ahead. After the break the Koreans upped their game again and built a commanding 17-13 lead. This proved too far for the Chinese pair and the Korean's closed out the game 21-15 to take the match to a deciding set. Now with their tails up, the Koreans dominated the third game. It was now Lee Yong Dae who commanded the front court area and Jung Jae Sung's clever combination of smash and drop shots forced the Chinese into making too many mistakes. The mid-game interval came with a commanding 11-5 lead to the Koreans. After the break the attack was relentless with the Chinese pair given no opportunity to get back into the game. The Koreans closed out the game and the match 21-11. Final score – Lee Yong Dae/Jung Jae Sung beat Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng 14-21 21-15 21-11 |
| Doubles delight for Stawski and Smith in Turkey |
Victor's Ben Stawski and Lauren Smith were crowned Mixed Doubles champions in the Turkiye Open 2011 in Antalya after the No. 1 seeds beat fellow brits Chris Coles and Jessica Fletcher in straight games 21-19 21-13. The day got better for Stawski as he and partner Paul Van Rietvelde from scotland also took the men's doubles when the unseeded pair overcame Danish fourth seeds Mikkel Mikkelsen and Nikolaj Overgaard 21-19 21-13. Lauren Smith also had her sites set on a second title after reaching the women's doubles final with Alex Langley. But the second seeds and Portuguese International winners went down to unseeded Gabriela and Stefani Stoeva 21-14 16-21 21-10. |
| Lee Yong Dae & Jung Jae Sung Dominate in Denmark |
The Victor sponsored Korean Men's Doubles pairing of Lee Yong Dae (Bravesword 9) and Jung Jae Sung (Meteor X80) showed once again why they are ranked World No. 2 after a devastating display of attacking badminton to win the Yonex Denmark Open Superseries Premier final. The Korean pair had a tough route to the final and had to endure two three-set matches along the way against home favourites from Denmark, Jonas Rasmussen and Mads Conrad-Petersen and then again in the semi-finals against the in-form Indonesian pair of Markis Kido and Hendra Setiawan who had beaten Lee Yong Dae/Ko Sung Hyun at the Japan open. In the final the Victor sponsored pair came up against the world number 1s and reigning World Champions from China Cai Yun and Fu Haifeng. It was evident from the beginning that the Korean pairs' tactic was to attack the Chinese. The Korean's moved forward in the court as much as possible, pressurising the normally steady Chinese pair into mistakes. The Koreans attack was relentless and uncharacteristic mistakes by the Chinese pair enabled the Koreans to open up an 18-13 lead. After just 17 minutes Lee Yong Dae/Jung Jae Sung had 5 match points and although Cai Yun's nice net touch saved one game point the Koreans took the game on the very next point after a poor Chinese serve into the net - 21-16. The second game started in much the same fashion as the first with the Koreans attacking at every opportunity and but for Cai Yun's excellent defensive play, the half way margin of 11-9 could have been considerably higher. After the mid-game interval the Chinese could never get on terms with the Koreans with more uncharacteristic errors handing easy points away. The Victor sponsored pair wrapped the match up in just 41 minutes taking the second game 21-17. Final match score - Lee Yong Jae/Jung Jae Sung (Korea) beat Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng (China) 21-16 21-17 |
